The Open Door - Kaleb Babb

So let’s start off my saying HELLO! I

Im not sure how many of you I might know but my name is Kaleb Babb and I am a Junior theatre major in the department. For those of you who don’t know Liz, she’s awesome and this class has a lot of potential to be really awesome if we all put a lot of effort and talk about all our plays.

So here goes…

At first glance I felt that Alfred’s writing was a little dry but getting into the scene colors started to show through. I loved that when I was reading it felt like I was watching an old television soap opera. I was just waiting for one of them to proclaim the lost of a distant stepson or a removed cousin.

Its hard for me to say a lot of anything else because frankly and honestly I had a lot of trouble reading it. Perhaps if it were written about a more interesting subject matter it might be more amusing to an audience. As a student my mind if locked in designer mode. I had a lot of trouble visualizing any set costumes or lighting for this production thus making it less entertaining.

Better luck next time perhaps.

  1. Alfred Sutro play was somewhat difficult to follow. I agree with that but he did provide some descriptions that could provide visualizations of the period. !920's, hot July night, the drawing room would I imagine be filled with books, a large table probably wing back chairs. I found the story to be about a relationship that is forbidden. Two people profess their love for one another but choose not to act on it because Jack is Sir Geoffrey best friend and Lady Torminster's husband. I notice you did not mention that aspect of play. I do know if it is because of different points of view. The play was not packed with excitement. I do agree with that point. I feel it was more about a forbidden love and they finally had an opportunity to express their feelings. Hopefully you will enjoy the next readings.

  2. If you think this one is hard to follow wait until next week. This one was pretty easy for me to picture. My dad does a lot of acting for the BRLT so it was easy to stick him into the role of Geoffrey.

By todays standards this would have been a tame interlude..... I bet Brad and Angolina would have made it a bit more interesting.
